At night I was scared to even stand outside it. The ubiquitous Disneyland castle silhouette rose up behind locked gates, the light of the massive full moon suffusing it with eerie light. However in the morning with sun beating down and the shadowy recesses all but gone, we ventured inside. It was literally a ghost town, everything still perfectly intact, but completely and utterly empty. The candy coloured paint had begun to fade and the metal tracks were giving way to rust. For hours we explored the massive Nara Dreamland, its abandonment a sign of its failure to capture Disneyland’s essence and ride its coat tails to success.
